Faith in Action

Calvary United Methodist supports the non-profit organization, Faith in Action in our community. Their mission is to help seniors remain independent for as long as possible by connecting volunteers with local seniors who have a need for transportation to medical or other necessary appointments, or a need to be assisted with grocery shopping, or perhaps just need a friendly phone call or visit occasionally, or maybe yard work in the fall or spring. Currently, there are 700 seniors needing services and 520 care givers, including 25 care givers from Calvary! Please consider volunteering by visiting bnfia.org/volunteer to obtain an application or call the Faith In Action office at 309-827-7780, or visit the Connection Center kiosk in the atrium.

Join in the Matthew 25 Celebration!

Matthew 25 2019-09-15.png

We hope everyone was able to participate in the daily challenges made available this past week. This Sunday we gather to celebrate the ways God has moved us to care for “the Least of These.”

In addition to coming to Worship this Sunday we want to invite you to:

  1. Fellowship with coffee and donuts in the Hub area!

  2. Consider Sponsoring a Child from our partner region of Buliisa, Uganda. Not only can you change the life of a child, sponsorship provides the greatest community impact for sustainable change. Sponsorship displays can be found at the Kiosk in the atrium OR in the Hub.

  3. Take time to pray. Stop by the chapel, pick up guided prayer suggestions and lift up brothers and sisters around the world who are in need.

  4. Take your own “Walk for Water” on the Calvary Track. Pick up a jerry can filled with water to see how heavy it is, walk around the track and read about the need for clean water and the life-giving water projects made possible through our support of Uganda WASH.

  5. Go down to the gym, see the Buliisa, Uganda display and take time to write a note, draw a picture, create something to provide encouragement for your sponsor child or for the World Vision staff who work to bring hope and change to the children we sponsor and their families.

  6. Don’t forget to drop off your donation in the atrium for Home Sweet Home Ministries Big Give. If you forgot to pick up items this week – it’s not too late. Head to the store before or after worship and bring your donation back to drop off.

  7. Join the Calvary family for a BBQ lunch on Sunday at 11:45 in the gym. No reservations necessary! Just come, enjoy a meal and hear the latest news from Buliisa from our World Vision liaison who visited there last summer!

  8. If you have time after the meal there will be an opportunity to help pack up items donated for the Big Give so they can be picked up on Monday.

Hurricane Relief through U.M.C.O.R.

If you'd like to contribute to hurricane relief directly, you can designate these funds on the memo of your check or select these as options from our mobile or web giving opportunities. Donations for the Bahamas can be made through UMCOR's International Disaster Response Advance #982450. Money from this fund is used to respond to disasters around the world. In the U.S., donate to the U.S. Disaster Response Advance #901670 for the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Red Bird Mission Thank You

Thank you for your generous support of Red Bird Mission. We collected MANY, MANY tubs of school supplies for Red Bird Christian School. We also collected $745 of our goal of $2370 to purchase new middle school science curriculum. Because we fell short of our goal, we are extending the time until the end of September if you would like to contribute to that fund. Please make a notation on your check that the donation is for Red Bird Mission or choose Red Bird Curriculum on our web or app giving options.

Backpack Ministry

Parkside Backpack Food Ministry.jpg

Many children in our community get their breakfast and lunch at school at a reduced price or for free; however, when school is closed on weekends and holidays, many of these children go hungry. Calvary has partnered with Parkside Elementary School and the Midwest Food Bank to make sure their students don’t go hungry. Last year we were able to help 100 students from Parkside each week with their food needs. There are many opportunities to help with this program from unloading food, packing the bags for the children, dropping off the bags at the school and by donating food. Stop by the kiosk in the atrium to learn more about the program or to sign up to help. We are also always looking for food donations. Individually packaged cereal, oatmeal, fruit cups, vegetable cups, macaroni & cheese, pasta meals, crackers, chips or goldfish are always needed. Please no perishable foods. Feel free to drop off any food donations to the kiosk on August 18th and August 25th or take them to the welcome center anytime. We appreciate all that Calvary has done for this program and know that we will be able to continue to help those students in need.
